Becoming the Leader God will Use in Our Generation

Becoming the leader God uses is something that touches my heart. I was in a conference few days back where one of the presenters raised a very important question concerning urgent need for leaders who will lead our generation out of the ruts of leadership decadence.

The truth is that God is never short of leaders. Even if they are few, God always use leaders by raising them to bring transformation where chaos and corruption has prevailed.

Few examples like Moses, Gideon, Elijah, David, Nehemiah, Ezra, Daniel and many others in the New Testament were used by God to bring undeniable revolutionary leadership that brought lasting transformations in their era.

But then, the question remains how do we become the leaders God will use in this generation?

Let’s take a clue from how God raised leaders during the period of Moses. In Numbers 11:14, Moses became overburdened with his leadership responsibility in Israel. The men who numbered about six hundred thousand wearied him by making impossible demand. Moses cried to God that he was not able to bear this entire people alone, because it is too heavy for him.

Also, remember the counsel Moses received when his father-in-law visited him and saw the leadership workload of Moses and how he would sit down from morning till evening attending to people and would not eat (Exodus 18:13).

Then the father-in law told Moses that what he was doing is not good, and that he will surely wear away, both himself and the people. Because this (leadership) thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to perform it yourself alone (Exodus 18:17:18).

Now, back to Numbers 11:16-17, God told Moses, “Gather unto Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them…..and I will come down and talk with you there; and I will take of the spirit which is upon you and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you shall bear it not yourself alone.”

I WILL TAKE OF THE SPIRIT UPON YOU

Let me raise a matter before I conclude in this article and continue in the next one, that nobody can ever become the leader God uses without the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit is the Enabler for spiritual leadership.

Also, do you notice that God did not say, “I will put the Spirit upon them?” But God said, “I will take of the Spirit upon you and will put it on them.” In other words, it was just going to be a shared Spirit from what Moses carried.

DON’T QUENCH THE SPIRIT

So, how come Moses was overburdened and could not bear this entire people alone even with such fullness of the Spirit of God upon him?

“Now, do you know you can be filled with the Holy Spirit and yet be distressed, frustrated, confused, overburdened and weakened by the challenges you ought to be above?”

The truth is: Whenever you do things in the arms of the flesh even when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you will soon burn-out and become wearied. Those who live in the Spirit must walk in the Spirit. If you are full of the Spirit and operate in the flesh, you are quenching the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19).

As soon as Elijah switched from the Spirit to emotion in 1 Kings 19:4 because of the threat of Jezebel, he ceased to be a man of fire and became a man of fear asking for death.

So let me conclude by saying becoming the leader God uses in this generation is not a matter of being young or old, not a matter of being a new leader or an old leader. The emerging leader needs the Holy Spirit. Also, the existing leaders need to return to the life of the Spirit.

Are you also becoming weary in your leadership assignment? Is the assignment God has committed to you becoming so wearisome by the day? It is either you need the filling of the Holy Spirit or you need to stop quenching the Spirit in your life. Your flesh does not have what it takes to engage in leadership. You need to live and walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:25) and that’s when you can become the leader God will use in such a time as this.

Please pray that God will fill you afresh with the Holy Spirit and pray for the Grace to always allow the Holy Spirit to work through you. Then go ahead, speak in tongues, pray in the Holy Ghost.
